THE SUPREME HEAD OF THE UNIVERSAL SYRIAN CHURCH'S

APOSTOLIC VISIT TO AUSTRALIA  - JANUARY 1998.

At exactly 08:10 am of Saturday 03JAN1998, H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. The Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Church arrived in Melbourne airport, accompanied by H.E. Archbishop Mor Severius Isaac Saka, The Patriarch Vicar for Theological Studies and Faith Conventions, Very Rev. Raban Kuryakous, The First Patriarchal Secretary, and Very Rev. Raban Elia Bahi, The Second Patriarchal Secretary.

Those honoured with the reception of H.H. and the accompanied delegation were H.E. Mor Dyonosyous Issa Korboz, The Patriarchal Vicar in Germany, and the Rev. ArchPreists, and Priests from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

At the time when H.H. approached the VIP Lounge, He was welcomed with the traditional Hymn that is designed for the reception of the Holy Fathers "To Bashlom ....."

At 05:00 pm of the same day, the faithful gathered at the newly constructed Mor Yacoub Burd'ono's Church, of 75 Whites Lane, Yuroke 3063, Melbourne, Australia, led by the Rev. Archpriests and Priests; Very Rev. Fr. Boutros Touma Issa, Very Rev. Fr. Abdallah Koljah, Very Rev. Raban Malki Yousef, Rev. Fr. Zaki Zeitoun, Rev. Fr. Iskandar Afram, Rev. Fr. Abdel Ahad Zeitoun, and Rev. Fr. Georges Alkan.

At 05:30 pm, H.H. accompanied by the two Archbishops, and the two Patriarchal Secretaries together with Rev. Fr. Afram Afrim {Mor Yacoub Burd'ono's Church's Priest}, at which time H.H., the accompanied delegation, and all those gathered in H.H.'s reception went into the Church for Thanksgiving Prayers, and the Eve prayers. Following prayers at the Church, all those present were invited to the adjacent hall for the afternoon tea in H.H.'s honour.

AT THE AFTERNOON TEA FOLLOWING AFTERNOON PRAYERS AT MOR YACOUB'S CHURCH HALL.

Next morning, Sunday 04JAN1998, H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas performed the consecration of the Alter and the Church of Mor Yacoub Burd'ono, assisted by H.E. Mor Severius Isaac Saka, Mor Dyonosyous Issa Korboz. This was followed by the Holy Mass celebrated by H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, assisted by the Archbishops. During the Holy Mass, H.H. delivered a speech in Arabic that was interpreted directly into the Syriac Dialect of Tor Abdeen by H.E. Mor Dyonosyous Issa Korboz. Through this speech H.H. thanked The Almighty God for the great gifts given to the parishioners of Mor Yacoub Burd'ono's Church, thanking Rev. Fr. Aphrem Afram, the Mor Yacoub Burd'ono's Church Council, the parishioners, and all those who participated, and helped in constructing this great house of The Lord.

Following these services H.H., the accompanying delegation, and all the faithful headed to the adjacent hall for lunch. Then H.H. removed the vale from the plaque that holds the memorial dates of this great occasion on the entrance of the Church.

This was followed by an interview held with H.H. by the television (SBS), this was broadcasted through the 6:30 p.m. World News on SBS.

We pray to the Almighty God for the best of health and life for H.H. Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. We also congratulate Rev. Fr. Aphrem Afram, the parishioners and all those who participated in making this dream come through, thus building this great church, the first according to the Syrian Orthodox style in Australia.


This is the first Syrian Orthodox Church in Australia that is built according to the Syrian Orthodox design. The church is 35 meters length and 15 meters width.

 We all thank The Almighty God for the great blessings given to us being able to build up this Church. Further, all the thanks to the generous faithful, who exerted every effort to see this church, finalised.
