The Supreme Head of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church. At the time when he was an Archbishop was given the responsibility to supervise and oversee the affairs of the Syrian Orthodox community members in New Zealand. H.H. continues to render his personal support and care for the Syrian Orthodox community members in New Zealand.  Therefore, in his capacity as the Patriarch and the Supreme Head of the Syrian Orthodox Church, and in the year 1987 visited Canberra, Perth and New Zealand in addition to Sydney and Melbourne.

The latest visit by H.H. to Australia was in the year 2002, and this was marked with the consecration of another two churches in the Eastern States, while some of the Archbishops who accompanied H.H. on this visit went to New Zealand to visit our community members there.

As a result V. Rev. Raban Mousa Al-Shamany was appointed as the Parish Priest for the small community in New Zealand.  In 2006 V. Rev. Raban Mousa Al-Shamany was promoted to the rank of Archbishop, and now he resides in Northern Iraq.
